New York Reciprocity and Recognition
The laws governing the legal use, storage and carrying of firearms are constantly changing. Below are the applicable laws in the State of New York as of 8/20/2025. The below information is designed to be a guide and not the final word. If you have specific questions, please refer to the State of New York legislation. Another great resource is the New York State Police's web page on the topic of firearms.
The State of New York does NOT honor permits/license from any other state, so permits from New York are not honored in any other states. This said, one can still carry in states that do not require a permit.
Non-Carrying Transportation
Under the Federal Law Firearms Owners' Protection Act (FOPA), you can transport a firearm across state lines for a lawful purpose, provided it is unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container with ammunition stored separately, even if the destination state does not recognize your permit.
