The laws governing the legal use, storage and carrying of firearms are constantly changing. Below are the applicable laws in the State of New York as of 8/20/2025. The below information is designed to be a guide and not the final word. The State of New York does NOT honor permits/license from any other state, so permits from New York are not honored in any other states.  This said, one can still carry in states that do not require a permit.

Non-Carrying Transportation

Under the Federal Law Firearms Owners' Protection Act (FOPA), you can transport a firearm across state lines for a lawful purpose, provided it is unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container with ammunition stored separately, even if the destination state does not recognize your permit.
